Indonesian-born and Singapore-based singer-songwriter-producer Rangga Jones released studio album “Everything I’ve Watned to Say” on May 9. We connected with him to chat about his past in fashion, his relationship (with his guitar) and everything else he wanted to say.

I didn’t try to write my own lyrics or produce my own songs till 2019, but before that, I was like messing around with EDM producing stuff. So before pop music and R&B, it was EDM for me. So that’s where I learned producing. I self taught myself producing through YouTube tutorials. You know, that’s where our learning structure of a song is, you know, you’ve got, like, the verse, you know, the hook part, then you got the drop. The drop was my favorite part when I was doing EDM stuff. But, yeah.
Probably somewhere in the fashion side of things. Maybe I didn’t study it, but I was in the fashion industry for work for, like, around two years -ish, so I used to work in a sales floor, and then I got promoted into the office side, which is awesome, by the way, and that’s where I learned a lot of, fashion industry stuff, and I needed to learn, you know, your fall, winter collection and all that stuff.
I’ll answer both, okay, for artists, I gotta go with the man, Justin Bieber. He he’s the one that made me do this whole thing. He still is my biggest inspiration. And for the fashion guy, probably right now, Pharrell Williams, because he’s head of LV.
That is such a funny question. What would he say? The guitar probably tell you that I like to write songs at weird timings at night, and I like to not finish songs as well and just leave them there in the voice notes and just find weird chords that I don’t even know. I have zero music theory too. So whenever I write songs, it’s whatever sounds good to me. So yeah, that’s probably what my guitar will tell you.
I wish I had music theory. I feel like that would help me so much. And like, the process of things would be so much faster. So that’s probably the only superpower. And =maybe know every word in the dictionary. Yeah, I think those two, yeah.
If you’re talking about 88rising, I would love to work with Rich Brian, because he’s Indo(nesian) too, and obviously Nikki, you know what I mean, the two Indos. And then you got Warren Hue too, the three Indos, actually. K-pop one, I’m still stuck on that. Maybe someone from a girl group probably Newjeans, that’ll be sick. Or like Le Sserafim. Or like a member of Le Sserafim, maybe. You know how like they do, like features as a solo member? Yeah, that’d be sick. And of course, BTS, I would love that. Come on. I was in a J-hope concert a few weeks ago, amazing. My first k pop concert ever. The production, the outfits, top notch. I rated it as 11 out of 10.
Yeah, so this album is kind of a close one to me because it’s about what I went through. So, last year I went through a breakup of a seven year relationship, and it sucks, and I had so much thoughts and emotions that I wanted to write out into songs. So that’s what “Everything I’ve Wanted to Say” is about. If you see, like how the songs, how the album is structured, you can kind of see me going through like the breakup, the acceptance, the sadness, the grief, and then I found love again. Hence the name, “Love Again”, right? That’s my lead single. So it’s just literally what the title says. The song is about finally finding love again. When I’m about to give up. I really was about to give up on love, man. It sucks, dude. But I didn’t find her. She kind of found me. We both found each other. and then that was the big inspiration of “Love Again”.
