There’s always new contenders to take out Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas in December, and this year we may have worthy contenders in Ed Sheeran and Elton John.
After Sheeran slipped that it was in the works in October during an interview, we can now finally listen to the single called Merry Christmas.
Prior to its release, the two good friends took to their socials to promote the single via a rip off Love Actually scene, you know the one. In true Christmas fashion with a side of cheek – Ed Sheeran stands at the door of Elton’s house dropping oversized note cards that replay what took place a year ago when Elton called him with the idea of a “Christmas song”.
After shrugging it aside and pretending he didn’t have any interest, Ed did what he does best and wrote the chorus for the forthcoming single that very day after the phone call.
The 74 year old singer revealed that the single was supposed to be a secret up until the release date announcement but as mentioned earlier Ed accidentally let loose of the news while in the Netherlands promoting his new album “=” (equals).
“Yeah, he let the cat out of the bag, didn’t he?” John told NME when he was asked about the gaffe. “I was sworn to secrecy and then big mouth f***ing Sheeran goes to the Netherlands!”
Both artists released number 1 albums this year, John with his thirty second studio album Lockdown Sessions that includes features from some of music’s most praised artists new and old, and Sheeran with his fourth album “=” (equals)
